Florida Commerce Credit Union
Passion, dedication, and creativity. Those are just a few words that describe the C2U (Committed to You) philosophy at Florida Commerce Credit Union. Blended with the national credit union credo of “people helping people,” this philosophy led to FCCU’s Commit-a-thon initiative and has resulted in thousands of dollars and volunteer hours being donated to local charities.
This community-based program allows each department within the credit union to choose a charitable organization in the Tallahassee area and then support that cause for one month. Since early this year, team members have volunteered, raised funds and joined in hands-on activities for their chosen organizations.
According to Kristin Richardson, FCCU’s community relations manager, the goal of the Commit-a-thon is to raise awareness of locally based, underserved organizations that exhibit the same level of passion and commitment as Florida Commerce. It’s also designed to promote volunteerism among the credit union’s employees. “We’ve been a community fixture for over 65 years. It’s our responsibility to give back to those that have made us who we are today,” said Kelley Dettmer, manager of the credit union’s Mahan branch.
Since January, Florida Commerce has contributed over $25,000 and countless hours of volunteer time to charitable causes such as the Ronald McDonald House, St. Augustine Hills Plantation, Refuge House, Second Harvest Food Bank, Relay for Life, North Florida Burn Camp (Camp Amigo), the March of Dimes, Bond Community Center, North Florida Baptist Children’s Home and the Humane Society.
Wilma Wooten and members of the accounting department recently took 28 children from the Florida Baptist Children’s Home on a “back to school” shopping spree at Kohl’s. When asked what impacted her the most by participating in the Commit-a-thon, Wooten, the credit union’s controller, reflected, “We get wrapped up in our lives and work and sometimes you need to stop and take time out for other things in life. It was so unbelievable to see the smiles on the faces of children appreciating simple things we take for granted.”
The most important aspect of the Commit-a-thon is to help enrich the community, but also to boost morale and enhance the lives of team members at Florida Commerce Credit Union. “I’m very proud to work for an organization that not only cares about its employees but also cares so much about the community. We built stronger relationships and enhanced synergy because we were all focused on a goal that each of us had equal responsibility to meet,” said Donna Moran, human resource director.
“C2U … Committed to You” is the tagline and promise Florida Commerce Credit Union has made to its members and the community.
